  Maria Montessori Maria Montessori

Dr. Maria Montessori (1870-1952) was the first woman to graduate with a doctorate in medicine from the University of Rome. Dr. Montessori observed children and came to believe that every child has an inner desire and ability to explore, discover, and learn. The Montessori philosophy is based on years of scientific observation of children in many different countries, cultures and socio-economic backgrounds. The Montessori Method is an approach that reflects a deep respect for the child, who takes an active, rather than a passive, role in his/her development.

Dr. Maria Montessori opened her first classroom, “Casa dei Bambini” or the “Children’s House” in Italy in 1906. This prepared environment provided an opportunity for 40 to 60 inner-city children to evolve into a community of very respectful and well educated young children. This first Montessori classroom became world renowned and Montessori schools as well as Montessori Teacher Training Centers then began to spread throughout Europe and Asia. Montessori Education is now worldwide.

Montessori Education came to the United States just before World War II. There are over 5,000 Montessori schools in the United States today. Montessori can be found in Head Start, inner cities, migrant worker camps, on Indian reservations, etc. They can be private or non-profit, in the private sector of education or as alternative public or charter schools.

There are many well-known and respected people all over the world who have been involved in Montessori Education or have associated with Dr. Maria Montessori herself. Some of these famous people were Anne Frank, who attended a Montessori school, Carl Yung, and Princess Diana who worked as a teacher in a Montessori school. Julia Child also attended a Montessori school as well as who developed “Google” and said that Montessori education helped them to “think outside the box”.

Montessori Education tries to encompass all the areas of learning including respect for people and the environment, peaceful interaction, and practical learning beyond text books that develops a community of children who will continue to respect and learn more about the world around them. The children are our future and we need to offer the best education for life, starting at a young age.

“The discovery of the powers of the child is the most important discovery humanity has ever made and uncovers the very roots of our life.”
