  Child with mop. Montessori Education

This system of education is based on the child’s developmental needs for freedom within limits, and a carefully prepared environment which provides exposure to materials and experiences through which to develop intelligence as well as physical and psychological abilities. It is designed to take full advantage of the self-motivation and unique ability of young children to develop their own capabilities.

Casa dei Bambini, “Children’s House” in Italian, is a child-centered environment where the adults guide and assist the children as needed. The children are free to work on a table or rug, as there is no assigned seating. There is a wide array of purposeful exercises for the children to explore. All of the materials are hands-on for the children to experience. Maria Montessori discovered that children learn best by doing, rather than by being told.

Maria Montessori observed that children learn best according to their own particular learning style and pace. Progress is based on readiness and ability, not by age. The children get lessons from the teacher, from another student, or they are free to observe another child’s work.

Maria Montessori found that children between the ages of birth and six years old have an “absorbent” mind. They are like little sponges absorbing information easily. She also discovered that children have sensitivities to order, movement and language during this time span.

Respect is a very important part of the Montessori community. Respect for the materials is practiced as well as respect for other people. Grace and courtesy lessons are role-played to provide the ground rules of the classroom and playground. Positive language is used both by the adults and the children. Positive discipline is also an important part of the curriculum to help create positive social interactions among children and adults.

Children learn best through repetition. Repetition is allowed and encouraged in the Montessori classroom. The students are also learn process by completing the cycle of activity through concentration. Process is taught through sequencing of methodical steps. This develops strong self-esteem and self-confidence which are the main goals for each child.

An observation of the Montessori environment is strongly recommended to fully appreciate the Montessori Education.

“Education is a natural process spontaneously carried out by the individual and is acquired not by listening to words but by experiences upon the environment.”
